SÁMI REINDEER HERDERS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT from Saami Circle North America
An exhibit of works and artifacts on loan from Saami Circle North America will be featured in the Finlandia Art Gallery, at the Finnish American Heritage Center from August 27th through September 23rd.
The newly renamed Saami Circle North America has produced exhibits highlighting Sámi history and culture seen in numerous venues in the United States and Nordic countries. Finlandia Art Gallery, at the Finnish American Heritage Center is honored to be named among that list.

“Walking with Reindeer” by Erika Larsen is one of the exhibits that is on display. A photographic collection from 2007 to 2011, that tells of Larsen’s time living with the Sámi reindeer herders in Norway and Sweden. Her work has been included in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, National Geographic Society, The Swedish Museum of Ethnography and Ajtte Sámi Museum. Larsen is a highly decorated artist and a recipient of several grants and fellowships including a Fulbright Fellowship, New Jersey State Arts Council Fellowship, Women in Photography Individual Project Grant and the Lois Roth Endowment.

“Sámi Herders in Alaska” is a photographic exhibit that documents the 137 Sámi herders and their families that were hired by the United State Reindeer Project from 1894-1898. On display will be artifacts, ranging from wooden cups to a Sámi hanging cradle.
The opening reception will be highlighted by remarks from Marlene Wisuri who is the board chair of Saami Circle North America, in Duluth Minnesota.

February 11th 2027, 7-8:30 p.m., Opening reception for “Colors of the North”. The exhibition will be on display from February 11th-April 1st.
