Nordic Film Series opens 2017 with Finnish documentary

The Nordic Film Series at Finlandia University€™s Finnish American Heritage Center with a documentary film set during the war years, but from a perspective not typically shared. The film will be shown at 2 and 6 p.m. on Thursday, January 12.

Tuntematon emäntä (The Unknown Woman) is a 2011 documentary that depicts the reality of Finnish agriculture and forestry during the war years, when the home front relied entirely upon the work and endurance of the country€™s women because the men in their prime were on the front.

Scripted and directed by Elina Kivihalme, the documentary won Finland€™s Jussi Award for best documentary in 2012. It is one hour and 20 minutes long, and is in Finnish with English subtitles.

The showing of Tuntematon emäntä is also a Heikinpäivä 2017 event; the annual midwinter festival features a variety of cultural and enrichment programming for the entire family, with a full day of celebration on January 28.
