Fundraiser for Kivajat is October 30

The Kivajat Finnish-American Folk Dance Group, made up of area youth ages 8-18, has been invited to perform and teach at the Tanssiva Turku dance festival in Turku, Finland in June 2019. The group specializes in Finnish and American folk dances and has been a popular attraction at many local events including Finlandia€™s Heikinpäivä, Juhannus, and Ruska Festivals.

Kivajat is partnering with Joey€™s Seafood & Grill in Houghton to raise funds to help with travel expenses. The public is invited to mention €œKivajat Fundraiser€ when they dine in or take out at Joey€™s on October 30, between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., and Joey€™s will generously donate 20% of the bill to the folk dancers.

The group has been to Finland twice before, and Kivajat€™s leader, Kay Seppala is excited to share the experience with the new crop of young people in the group. €œInternational travel can be life-changing,” Seppala said. “Many of these dancers have Finnish roots, and will get to meet and learn from other dancers from across Europe. It€™s a fantastic opportunity.€
